These days, it seems that every place you go, you will encounter some forms of artificial intelligence. For instance, there are chatbots resolving customer care issues and systems such as Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri responding to some of your weird questions at weird times. It has eased off tension in many aspects of human life. It mends hits-and-runs, adorns spaces with visuals, and it even drafts an essay. But, in all these advancements, AI has often been subject to errors. And sometimes these errors can be downright funny.
Chatbots Gone Awry
Everyone has gone through this stage at some point: using a chatbot, pressing a lot of keys expecting an elaborate answer only to hear “Please rephrase your question”. You see, chatbots aren’t so competent in making illusions of human learning and behaviour at appropriate times. This is where comedians are expected to step in. More on that later. Let’s start out with one of the most popular failures of the bots – Tay. Aimed at engaging Twitter users, Tay soon began to engage in some very offensive behaviour imitating the words inscribed in the posts of Twitter users. In less than a day, it joined the ban that all wrong things join. One example that stands out is when the Google customer service bot caused storm in an attempt to answer a question which was: “I want to buy a laptop”. Since nobody wants to come including Google, these are the moments when we get some reminders that AI is still that way… rather stupid.
For the most part, some of these fails do not even stem from any ill intentions. One example of this is that chatbots have little knowledge of context, leading to ridiculous or even inappropriate responses at times. For instance, what do you say to a bot who is asked to recommend one good pizza only to recommend the latter reverts to healthy eating? Thanks, bot, but we were merely trying to make a choice between pepperoni and mushrooms. It is these sorts of weird seemingly off the wall responses that makes one a bit cautious while having conversations with AI.
Self-Driving Cars: Not Quite Ready for Prime
Another domain that AI is surely making lofty claims is the one dominated by the self-driving cars. However, when it came to the actual realization of those claims, it was bumpy to say the least. Self driving cars have made headlines for getting the surroundings wrong on several occasions; one girl mistook a traffic cone for a stop sign or even pedestrians saying there is a taxi coming to rent.
These errors have brought about awkward interactions and at times dangerous circumstances. There have been a number of media headlines that broke stories concerning self-driving fleets getting into unnecessary bumps or simply bringing the car to a standstill in the middle of the road owing to confusion of what to do next.
One interesting case was when a self-driven automobile came to a halt at a crosswalk after it could not decide if the person dressed in a Halloween costume was an actual human being. This story is worth telling since there have been significant developments in AI driving technology, however, it still does not compare with a skilled human driver.

SAY, WHAT’S UP DEEPFAKE ?!
Deep fakes emotes another amusing and at times dreadful, most of AI examples. Thanks to such deep learning algorithms, AI can be able to produce videos, which depict people saying things that they never uttered. It sounds, on one hand it’s great technology that brings forth most amusing content. Other aspects of it can be too sensitive especially with such technology where it may be difficult to distinguish real from fake.
Such includes deepfake videos of politicians, who are said to have made speeches they did not make and even including actors into movies they never featured in. Some of them are not harmful like placing Nicholas cage into every motion picture to have ever been shot; whilst others have born fruits of false propaganda. It is a bold reminder of both the sensitivity and the positive uses of AI technology.
Why These Fails Matter
AI indeed is amazing. It is, however, shocking that a machine may learn to interpret a language, drive a vehicle, or paint an authentic portrait. But the fails serve as a reminder that we still need to tread carefully. There is still room for improvement when working with AI whereby every effort was made to eliminate mistakes, but when there is a failure, the outcome can be funny, embarrassing or worse. These events draw attention to the need of responsible and safe development and make it clear that it should not be taken lightly, at least for now.
