How to Write Atomic Prompts for Midjourney v6?

There are many different ways to approach the creation of an AI-generated image and prompting. Atomic Prompting for Midjourney v6 is one of the methodologies for organising a prompt that helps make the lives of creators easier and their workflows much more efficient.

In this post, we will categorize the components of our prompt into three layers: Organism, Molecules, and Atoms. These layers work together to create a complete and well-defined artwork. We don’t necessarily have to include every element in every layer, but by adding them one by one, we can help Midjourney fully comprehend our creative direction.

Atomic prompting is inspired by the nature of reality. With that, we will organise components of our prompt according to three layers = Organism, Molecules and Atoms which together build the the Image.

Midjourney v6.1 Prompt Structure

Let us start this topic with a simple formula. Your prompt must look like this :

Now you might think “Is that simple?”

Midjourney Basic Prompt Examples:

  • Cinematic, woman from Vietnam walking in the rice fields
  • Portrait Photography, woman from Vietnam walking in the rice fields
  • Oil Painting, a woman from Vietnam walking in the rice fields

That looks good, but can we define the artwork more precisely?

Let’s add secondary-level details like location, weather, camera and emotion to make it like this:

A cinematic active photograph of a blond hair girl, cinematic shot at the gym full of smoke, wearing a white crop tank
Prompt: A cinematic active photograph of a blond hair girl, cinematic shot at the gym full of smoke, wearing a white crop tank

Midjourney v6.1 Prompting Tip!

The Midjourney Bot works best with simple, short phrases that describe what you want to see. Avoid long lists of requests and instructions. Instead of: Show me a picture of lots of blooming California poppies, make them bright, vibrant orange, and draw them in an illustrated style with colored pencils Try: Bright orange California poppies drawn with colored pencils

Remember 💡

Choosing the type of photography is a huge deal when we’re guiding Midjourney on what kind of magic we want to create. It’s literally the first choice we’ve got to make. Like, are we thinking about snapping a portrait or capturing the essence of a building? Maybe we’re leaning towards a cool fashion shoot or focusing on some slick product shots? And what about when we’re itching to capture an epic landscape? This bit is super key in shaping our prompt.

Next up, we dive into painting a picture with our words. Who’s in the shot? What’s going down in the scene? You don’t need to spill all the beans, but tossing in these juicy details can seriously crank up your control over what comes out in the wash. From what I’ve seen poking around in my prompt experiments, Midjourney seems to give top billing to the stuff we mention first. That’s why we slot these bits right at the front.
